Yunnan is one of China’s most extraordinary provinces — home to 25 ethnic minorities, landscapes that shift from subtropical valleys to high mountain passes, and a cultural depth that rewards slow travel. This itinerary moves through the south of the province, from the ancient town of Jianshui through the UNESCO-listed rice terraces of Yuanyang and on to the canola fields of Luoping, before returning to Kunming. Winter is one of the finest times to visit: the terraces are flooded and reflective, the crowds are thin, and the light in the south of Yunnan has a clarity that the summer months rarely offer.
Arrive in Kunming, capital of Yunnan and one of China’s most ethnically diverse cities. In the evening, take a leisurely walk around Cui Hu Lake — an oasis at the heart of the city, particularly peaceful in winter when the migratory birds are in residence. Savour your first taste of authentic Yunnan cuisine by the lake over a welcome dinner before settling in for the night.

After breakfast, drive to Jianshui, a well-preserved ancient town with roots stretching back to the Tang dynasty. Wander its cobblestone streets and explore the layered architectural heritage: the Chaoyang Gate, the Zhu Family Garden — a classical Qing dynasty courtyard complex of considerable scale — and the Jianshui Confucius Temple, the second largest in China. End the afternoon at Double Dragon Bridge, a Ming dynasty stone span of seventeen arches reflected in the water below, particularly fine in the late afternoon light.

Depart after breakfast for Yuanyang, one of the most remarkable agricultural landscapes in the world. En route, stop at Qingkou Hani Village, where the Hani people have farmed these terraced slopes for over a thousand years. Arrive in time for the late afternoon light at the Yuanyang Bada rice terraces, where the flooded paddies catch the sky and the surrounding hills in extraordinary colour at dusk.

Rise early for sunrise at Duoyishu — the most celebrated viewpoint in Yuanyang, where morning mist settles between the terraces and the light moves slowly across thousands of flooded fields. After breakfast, visit Azheke Village, a traditional Hani settlement of distinctive mushroom-shaped houses set among the terraces. In the afternoon, continue to Quanfuzhuang, where the scale of the terrace system becomes fully apparent — row upon row of paddy fields unfolding down the hillside in one of the great feats of sustained agricultural engineering anywhere in the world.

Set out on a scenic drive to Luoping, a town that transforms each spring into a sea of yellow canola flowers stretching across the valley floor and up into the surrounding karst hills. Arrive and take an unhurried walk through the Luositian fields — even in winter the landscape has a striking quality, with the karst formations rising from the open farmland in forms unlike anything found elsewhere in the region.

An early start for sunrise over the fields and karst hills before continuing to Jiulong Waterfall — nine separate cascades tumbling from a wide limestone shelf into the valley below, one of the most distinctive waterfall formations in southwest China. Spend the rest of the morning at leisure in the surrounding area before an afternoon drive onward.

On the return to Kunming, visit the Naigu Stone Forest — a quieter and less-visited alternative to the UNESCO-listed main site, where black limestone formations of considerable age create a landscape of striking shapes and deep shadows. Arrive in Kunming in the afternoon with the evening free for a final dinner and a walk along Nanping Pedestrian Street.
A final morning in Kunming before your onward connection. Time for one last bowl of crossing-the-bridge noodles and a walk through the city before your transfer to the airport.
Yunnan rewards those who come without rushing. The south of the province — Jianshui, Yuanyang, Luoping — is less travelled than the classic route through Dali and Lijiang, and the slower pace suits it well. In winter, the terraces are at their most reflective, the towns are at their quietest, and the journey through this part of the province has a particular quality that stays with you.
