格聂 or Genie is one of western Sichuan's most rewarding summer trekking destinations, and increasingly known among those who seek out the plateau's more demanding routes. A main road traces the outline of the mountain, but hiking into the interior is a different experience entirely - the scale of the snow massif, the density of wildflowers at altitude, and the quality of light on the lakes are things that can only be properly understood on foot.
The Genie region sits at the confluence of Tibetan plateau and Hengduan Mountain ecology: glacial lakes, old-growth forest, wildflower seas, and snow peaks within a single day's walk. In summer, the plateau is green, the passes are open, and the long daylight hours make for genuinely expansive hiking days. It remains relatively untouched compared to better-known destinations in the region - and the outer circuit, which forms the backbone of this itinerary, sees far fewer walkers than the trails closer to the road.
Our ten-day itinerary approaches from Chengdu, acclimatises properly in Jiagenba, and traverses the outer Genie circuit over four consecutive days - camping each night at altitude before returning to Litang and recovering on the Tagong Grasslands. It requires good fitness and a genuine appetite for the trail. What it gives back is proportionate.
Once a year, we take a small group into terrain we're still figuring out ourselves. These are founder-led expeditions into landscapes that don't yet appear on most itineraries - part scouting trip, part journey - along trails that are not well-mapped and into corners of China where the infrastructure tends to be basic. Suited to travellers with solid hiking fitness and an appetite for the unknown. Expect long days, high altitudes, variable conditions, and the particular satisfaction of being somewhere few foreigners venture.

Arrive in Chengdu and spend the day at your own pace. The city rewards unhurried exploration - a teahouse in People's Park, a bowl of dan dan noodles, an afternoon in Kuanzhai Alley. Rest well: the drive into the plateau begins tomorrow, and the altitude gains ahead are significant.
Accommodation: Your own arrangements
The drive west from Chengdu is already part of the journey. The road climbs steadily through the Erlang Mountain tunnel before emerging into the open plateau, and the moment the Zheduo Mountain Pass comes into view, the scale of what lies ahead becomes clear. The pass opens suddenly onto an endless expanse of grassland and snow peaks - a landscape that bears no resemblance to anything in lowland Sichuan. By the time you reach Jiagenba for the evening, the air is noticeably thinner and the plateau has fully announced itself.
Accommodation: Mu Lang 1993 Hidden World Hotel or similar (L, D)
Driving time: 6 hours
There is no shortcut to altitude acclimatisation, and today's four-hour hike exists for precisely that reason. The trail moves through open meadows and forested slopes above Jiagenba, gaining height gradually and allowing the body to adjust before the more demanding days ahead.
It is also simply a beautiful walk - wide views of the surrounding plateau, yaks on the hillsides, the kind of quiet that only comes at elevation. Take it slowly, drink plenty of water, and arrive back at the hotel ready for an early night.

The drive to Litang via the Heavenly Road Eighteen Bends (天路十八弯) is one of the great high-altitude road journeys in China. Eighteen switchbacks spiral up the plateau, each curve revealing a wider panorama than the last - snow peaks, golden grassland, and the vast open sky of the Tibetan world. At over 4,000 metres, Litang is one of the highest towns in the world, and its Thousand-Household Tibetan Village offers a vivid introduction to the living culture of this part of the plateau.
The day ends at Ranrika Village (然日卡村), the gateway to the Genie Trail. Settle in, eat well, and prepare your kit - the hike begins tomorrow.
Accommodation: Genie Huayu Mountain Villa Hotel or similar (B, L, D)
Driving time: 6 hours

The first day on the Genie Trail reaches one of its most iconic landmarks immediately. The Heart of Genie is a perfectly circular alpine lake whose form gives it its name — and across its still surface, the full face of Kamailong Snow Mountain is reflected with extraordinary clarity. Continue through Yingge Pasture to Fensang Terrace, where the southeastern glacier face of the Genie massif comes into full view, before descending to the Xiaozhа River Valley and arriving at Rizhao Jinshan Campsite. Hot springs await at the end of a long day.
Hike: 18km, 8h
Accommodation: Rizhao Jinshan Campsite (B, D)
Rise early for the alpenglow on the Genie peaks before setting out for the day's hike. The route passes through Lenggu Monastery - a solitary Tibetan Buddhist complex set deep in the valley, where the silence and the scale of the surrounding landscape give the place a gravity that is hard to articulate. The trail continues through old-growth forest before emerging onto open grasslands where wildflowers spread across the plateau and the glaciers of Genie fill the horizon. Arrive at Hangda Campsite, set directly below the southern face of the mountain. Camping at altitude is an experience of its own. The stars above the Genie plateau are exceptional.
Hike: 15km, 6h
Accommodation: Tents at Hangda Campsite (B, D)

A shorter but higher day. The trail climbs to Black Lake — a high-altitude tarn where the full Genie massif reflects in still water, and several smaller lakes cluster nearby in the afternoon for exploration. Camp at the lake's edge and wait for the sunset light on the snow peaks above. At 4,500 metres, the night will be cold and the sky will be remarkable.
Hike: 10km, 4h
Accommodation: Tents at Black Lake Campsite (B, D)
The most demanding day of the circuit. Cross a 4,880m pass - the highest point of the entire trek - before descending to Luoren Lake. Continue to Cuonaka (措娜卡), one of the finest viewpoints on the entire Genie circuit, where the snow peak rises directly from the far shore of the lake and the full scale of the massif is finally visible in a single frame. Descend through a wildflower canyon, pass through Zhaxikang, and continue down Reti Valley to the trail's end, where a vehicle transfers you to Litang. It is a day that requires everything and delivers accordingly.
Hike: 20km, 10h
Accommodation: Arro Khampa Litang or similar (B, D)
A recovery day on the plateau. Transfer to Xinduqiao or Tagong and settle into your accommodation - a considerably more comfortable base than the previous four nights.
Driving time: 5 hours
Accommodation: Paradise Namkha Resort Hotel or similar (B, D)
The long drive back to Chengdu descends from the plateau through changing landscapes - the grasslands giving way to forest, the forest to river valleys, and eventually the plains opening up as the city reappears on the horizon. Transfer to airport or city on arrival. Tour concludes.
